Welcome to Exceptional Student Education!

Marion County has 8,669 exceptional students enrolled in its public schools. An exceptional student is one who has special learning needs. The special assistance received in school is called ESE, Exceptional Student Education, or Special Education. Our goal is to provide every exceptional student with a free appropriate public education (FAPE), help them progress in school, access general curriculum, and prepare for life after school.

The Marion County Public School System offers a continuum of services and programs to meet the individual needs of students requiring special education, ages 3 through 21. The degree to which services are provided is based individually on each child's Individual Educational Plan as set forth by a staffing committee. The continuum of services may be provided in a variety of settings, which include regular classrooms, resource rooms, hospital/homebound, separate day school, special class and non-public school (contractual).

Parents and students moving to Marion County from another Florida school district, or from out of state, should visit the Student Services Evaluation Team page for information regarding enrollment and registration.

How well is your school supporting your involvement in your child's education?" What? The Florida Department of Education is conducting a survey designed to provide the state with information on how well schools are supporting parents' involvement in their childs education. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), states must report this information to the federal government on an annual basis. When? February 1 through July 1, 2012 Who? All parents of children with IEP's in preschool to 12th grade How? Go online to www.ESEsurvey.com to complete the survey Results? Survey results are reported to the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, as part of Florid's Annual Performance Report and are posted on the Florida Department of Education's Web site at www.fldoe.org/ese. No names will be released in any report. All responses are confidential. What can you do? The responses to the survey provide important information for planning and monitoring improvement activities. This survey, conducted only once a year, provides parents with a unique opportunity to be heard.

New times at MCPS

The school system's website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In fall 2011, Marion County Public Schools's public websites started to be restructured allowing school and department personnel to update their own sites behind the scenes.

Such an exercise takes time; and we hope you will bear with us!
