Overview of Services

The Marion County School Social Work Department promotes and supports the educational process by meeting the needs of students and their families. Social Work staff, assess needs, provide professional services and make referrals to community resources to overcome barriers and enable students to achieve educational success/academic performance. School Social Work provides services to students in schools, homes, and our community. School Social Work staff act as a liaison between school personnel and families and visit students’ homes, to work with their families. Social Workers network with many community agencies to obtain services for students. The Social Worker is knowledgeable about community agencies and may link families to various community agencies including: public/private health care and mental health care providers, non profit social and economic agencies, civic organizations, the Department of Children and Families, runaway shelters, law enforcement, and the court system. School Social Workers are frequently asked to serve on Student Assistance Teams at our schools. Due to the nature of the activities performed, School Social Work Services has a differentiated staff: Social Workers (professional) and Social Work Assistants (paraprofessional).

Social Workers also intervene when attendance/truancy issues develop and assist with crisis counseling when the need arises. They also play an important role in obtaining information from the family in completing exceptional student education assessments.

New times at MCPS

The school system's website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In fall 2011, Marion County Public Schools's public websites started to be restructured allowing school and department personnel to update their own sites behind the scenes.

Such an exercise takes time; and we hope you will bear with us!

Take a short cut

Where can I find it?

Use the new mega dropdowns to get an overview of the website's content. They open when you run your mouse over the navigation at the top.
