Health Screening Program

The District conducts a health-screening program according to Florida Statute 381.0056.   Health problems may affect a child’s ability to learn.

The Student Handbook will contain a statement informing parents that non-invasive health screening will occur in specific grade levels during the school year.  The Student Handbook is to be provided to parents at the beginning of each school year or at any other time enrollment.

Trained school staff or volunteers perform the initial screenings.  For any concern detected, a registered nurse will re-screen the child and if necessary, recommend a medical evaluation.

The Marion County School Health Services Plan reflects the following services:

Screening Provided Grade Level Included
Vision*   Pre K - K - 1 - 3 - 6
Scoliosis    6
Growth & Development   1 - 3 - 6
Nutrition    1 - 3 - 6 and on referral
Hearing*    Pre K - K - 1 - 6

Vision and hearing screening must be done for students entering a Florida school for the first time.

In addition to the above, students at Reddick Elementary, North Marion Middle and Ft. McCoy participate in the following screenings:

Blood Pressure   Grade 6 - 9
Growth & Development Nutrition Grade 6 - 9

Children in other grades will receive a screening if the teacher suspects a problem.
