In 1982, the Marion County School Board endorsed a comprehensive guidance plan model. Over the last several years, the ability to deliver these services has been lost to other roles and responsibilities that drive our current Guidance Plan. In the summer of 2003, the District Guidance Leadership Team of Marion County Public Schools gathered to evaluate current K-12 guidance services and began to redefine our comprehensive Guidance Plan tailored to the needs of Marion County students, aligned with the district strategic plan and state and national standards. The District Guidance Leadership Team met again in June 2004 to further refine the program and begin development of guidance curriculum. The result is an improved comprehensive program that will meet the needs of all students in Marion County and will assist the district in leading the state in student performance.
The Marion County Comprehensive Guidance Plan includes vision and mission statements as well as developmentally appropriate standards and skill indicators for academic achievement, career development and social/personal development for all students. Educational activities in the three content areas are organized into five program components. Program linkages are provided for seven of the goals specified in the District Strategic Plan. Also included are benefits of the comprehensive Guidance Plan and a brief description of a pilot program at nine Marion County Schools.
With the passage of HB 769 in 2004, Florida Statute 1006.025 now requires annual reporting on the status of district Guidance Plan development. Marion County Public Schools are well prepared to meet this new state requirement as a result of having the Comprehensive Guidance Plan in place.
