Event Title: Paintings of the Florida Highwaymen: An Overview of a contemporary African-American art tradition.

Details: Evening Program and Museum Open House. Join us February 18th for a Museum Open House and Evening Program on the Highwaymen artists of Florida. The Highwaymen are a group of artists, all of African-American descent and living in the Indian River area. Most are still living, some are still painting. Their artwork is recognized as the beginning of Florida’s contemporary art tradition. This program will be presented by Mollie Doctrow, Curator at the Museum of Florida Art & Culture on the South Florida Community College in Avon Park. Select Highwaymen paintings from the Museum of Florida Art & Culture collections will be on display. The Museum Open House runs from 4-6 pm, the evening program is from 6-7 pm. There is no admission charge; however due to limited seating reservations are needed for the program. Please call (352) 236-5401 for reservations or directions to the museum.
