George Tomyn, Superintendent of Schools
2012-2016

        George Tomyn was elected superintendent of schools in November 2012.  He was born and raised in Ocala, having attended public schools his entire career and graduated from Forest High School in 1972.  His college degrees come from Central Florida Community College, now known as the College of Central Florida (AA ‘74), Valdosta State College (BA in History ’76), and the University of Florida (MA in Educational Leadership ’80).
        Tomyn started his career with MCPS as a teacher at Osceola Middle in 1977. He also taught at Lake Weir High until becoming assistant principal at Dunnellon High in 1980. He transferred in 1986 as assistant principal to Vanguard High School. Nine years later in 1995, he was named principal at Sunrise Elementary. The very next year he was named principal at Forest High School, a position he held until moving to the district office in 2005. Since then, Tomyn was the executive director of School Development and Evaluation until his election as superintendent in 2012.
        Tomyn is active with the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS), Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA), the United Way of Marion County, Florida's Blood Centers, Take Stock in Children, and the Public Education Foundation of Marion County. He's also an Eagle Scout.
        Tomyn and his wife, Barbara, have raised two daughters. The Tomyns attend First Presbyterian Church in Ocala.
