State Certification Training Overview
LOCATION: FLORIDA STATE FIRE COLLEGE
This minimum standards certification course for certified Firefighter
II's is a mentally, physically, and emotionally challenging program
that includes extensive classroom and practical elements. The
240-hour course runs for six consecutive weeks, meeting Monday-Friday,
7 A.M. - 5 P.M., four times a year depending on availability. All
classes will be held at the Florida State Fire College campus,
located on County Road 25A in northwest Marion County. All class
sessions are presented regardless of weather conditions and no
absences are permitted. For information, dates, and times please

Minimum qualifications for certification as a career firefighter:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Have a standard high school
diploma or GED.
- Be of good moral character.
- Be in excellent physical condition
as determined by a thorough medical examination and be able
to participate in extremely strenuous physical activities
in hostile environments without restrictions.
- Meet the basic
skills requirement of credentials or test scores (see class
information).
- Successfully complete the Minimum Standards
Training Course and the State Certification Examination.
EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITIONING IS A MUST TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN
THIS COURSE.
Physical Qualification and Entrance Evaluation
The following skills must be successfully demonstrated.
The date and time to be announced.
- Sit-Ups:
The prospective student must complete 45 bent knee sit-ups within two minutes. The student will start flat on his/her back; knees bent; feet anchored
by another student; hands behind head with fingers interlocked.
The student will raise his/her upper body until an elbow
touches a knee, and then return to the starting position.
Resting is permitted in the up or down position.
- Push-Ups:
The prospective student must complete 25 push-ups (military style) within two minutes. The student will start in the "up" position, knees off the
ground. The student will lower their body until the elbow
reaches a 90-degree angle and then return to the starting
position. Resting is allowed in the up position only (front
leaning rest position).
- 1.5 Mile Run:
The prospective student must be able to run one and one-half (1.5) miles in 12.5 minutes or less.
- Ladder Carry:
The prospective student must be able to remove a twenty-four (24) foot extension ladder from a set
of mounting brackets 5½ feet high and carry the ladder
100 feet and place the ladder back onto the mounting brackets.
- Forcible Entry Simulation:
The prospective student must be able to drive a 115 lb. beam five feet using a 11 ½ pound shot hammer within five minutes.
- Hose Drag:
The prospective student must drag two sections of 2 ½ inch hose, coupled together,
one hundred (100) yards, and then turn around and drag the hose back to
the starting point.
Students who do not successfully complete all evolutions, will
not be allowed to continue in this class. Only one attempt allowed
on each event.

$10 application fee must accompany completed Class Request
Form. Due dates for all other fees will be mailed out once
the prospective student is selected to attend class.

Class Information
The Firefighter II State Certification course is offered four
(4) times a year - daytime only.
Approximately three (3) months prior to the class start date,
those applicants who have been selected for each class will be
notified by phone. Application packets will then be mailed, with
confirmation contingent upon the return of all required paperwork
and fees by a specified date. A Firefighter I Certificate of
Compliance issued by the Division of State Fire Marshall, Bureau
of Fire Standards and Training must accompany your class request
form with the Basic Skills requirement noted below. The Registration,
Certification, and Meal Plan fees must be sent with the completed
application (approximately six (6) weeks prior to the class starting
date).
IMPORTANT
The Basic Skils requirement is one of the following: Associate
of Arts, Baccalaureate or graduate-level degree or stipulated
test scores on SAT, ACT, CPT, MAPS or TABE (Complete
Battery or Survey, Level A) tests. TABE and CPT tests must not be over
two years old.
COPIES OF ONE OF THE ABOVE MUST BE RETURNED WITH THE RESPONDER
IN THIS BROCHURE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A CLASS.

must accompany your class request form with the Basic Skills
requirement noted below.
