English I Honors – Mrs. Stofel (marcia.stofel@marion.k12.fl.us)
100 Words Every High School Freshman Should Know
From the editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries
Write a creative story/poem/rap in which you use each of the 100 words. If you choose a poem format, you may need to do several in order to use all 100 words. You may change the tense of the vocabulary word. Example aspired could be used for aspire. You may use related words. Example: aspiration, aspirer could be used for aspire. Follow these guidelines:
· The words do not have to be used in order
· Type - double space
· Highlight or underline the words as you use them and include the corresponding number in parentheses. For example She aspired (5) to be first in her class. Aspire is labeled the 5th vocabulary word in the book.
· Maximum length 1000 words
Old Man and the Sea
Ernest Hemingway
1. Identify figurative language in the book. Copy the phrase exactly as it is written in the novel, tell the page number and indicate what type of figurative language it is. Do not use the examples given here.
A. Simile (find 10 examples) – a figure of speech that compares two dissimilar things by using words such as like, as, or as if. Example: “Lou was filling the blank pages with writing of importance to her, as a fisherman does his net.” Or “The curious pairing struck Lou as akin to fine pants over filthy boots.”
B. Metaphor (find 10 examples) – a figure of speech that links two unlike things directly without using words such as like, as, or as if. Example: “He held his worn stuffed bear with the unbreakable clench of a wrestler.”
C. Personification (find 5 examples) – a technique that gives human attributes to something that is not human. Example: “She looked at the threatening sky.” Or “A grin riding on full lips.”
2. Answer the study guide questions found on Mrs. Stofel’s website. The answers must be typed.

English II Honors – Mrs. Harmon (bessie.harmon@marion.k12.fl.us)
English II Honors
· Siddhartha by Herman Hesse
The assignments students will be expected to complete for Mrs. Harmon:
1. For Siddhartha, students will fill out the chart Monomyth Examples (link found on Mrs. Harmon’s website)) and create a visual (poster size) of the Monomyth Process (link found on Mrs. Harmon’s website). Since students may have limited information about geography or religions, some research may be needed for adequate background. Students must attach a list of sources and follow MLA format.
If additional information is needed to complete the activities, the following website may be useful: http://library.thinkquest.org/05aug/00212/monomyth.html
1. For Vocabulary: Complete Common Root word (link found on Mrs. Harmon’s website). You may use the handout or the attachment on Mrs. Harmon’s website (which will be posted in June).
Must be completed by the Friday of the first week of school and turned in. We will review and test over the reading in a reasonable time, given the unpredictable schedule at the beginning of the year.
