Semester Exam Due: Friday, January 11, 2013

Parents,

The semester exam for Algebra will be given on January 10th for my class. This is a very important test for many of the students because it will count 10% of the FINAL GRADE. Those whose grades that are borderline really need to take the time and study the next few days. I am reviewing in class but for these few students this will not be enough to guarantee their success. Please realize that if they fail this semester they WILL BE a credit behind towards graduation.

I have sent out via e-mail to your son/daughter a practice test with the answers attached that covers everything they will see on the test. Also another good source of practice is located in their book, pages 902-907.

Please make sure they review this information, it is vital to their success!

The next two weeks in Algebra Due: Thursday, January 03, 2013

11/30/12

Parents and students,

It is great to be back and I do apologize for long absence. You really never know how much you value things until you go through an experience like I have for the past 7 weeks. The reason I am writing you is that I wanted to catch the parents up on what is going to happen the next week two weeks.

I do realize that many of the students have struggled in my absence do to Mr. McMurrer having a different teaching style than mine. I do not believe this to be a reason for some of the poor performance by many of the students over the past 7 weeks but I can understand. My notes were sent via e-mail and I did provide many other accommodations for Mr. McMurrer to help the students succeed. That being said, I do feel I need to give the students another chance to prove to themselves they are capable of doing the work.

For the next two weeks I will be going back in the book and re-teaching the major concepts from Chapter three to Chapter six that the students will see on the state exam. Each student will be given three work sheets for each chapter, two sheets will contain fifteen to twenty problems from each section in that chapter and the third sheet will be a chapter test. It is THEIR choice to work on these sheets, doing the extra problems will only BENEFIT THEIR grades not hurt them, HOW?

I have explained to the students for each section they do they will receive two grades, a homework grade and a classwork grade. If the grade is better than the grade that was posted by Mr. McMurrer I will replace that grade with the better grade. If the make-up work is lower than what they currently have than Mr. McMurrer’s grade will stand. There is a catch here though, many chose to do NOTHING in my absence and have zeros for all their grades. For those who did not attempt to turn anything in, the highest homework grade and classwork grade they can make for a missing assignment is a 70%. I believe this only fair for those who worked hard during my absence. Please remember that this is an opportunity for the students to raise their grades and it is up to THEM to take advantage of this gift!

Again, it is great to be back and if there are any questions feel free to contact me.
