Course Description

Language A focuses on the reading process, literary analysis of fiction and nonfiction, and the writing process from drafting to publishing. National and international novels, short stories and poetry provide opportunities for students to learn about other cultures through the research process. Likewise, students will become adept in media literacy and informational text. Technology is a valued asset in both research and project creation Verbal, nonverbal and audio projects promote listening and learning skills. Creative, informative persuasive and expository writings are strengthened and practiced several times through different units. Entry tasks and Journal activities and Units are organized according to Marion County’s Focus Calendar Assessments that target specific Language skills each month.

A special project for each marking period will be required. The first nine week project will be a written fiction book report with additional visual presentations. The second nine week project will be a collaborative research report for a social studies or science grade as well as a Language Arts grade. The third nine weeks will be a written non-fiction book report with additional visual presentations.  The last nine week projects will be a research paper on the student’s future career or military goals.
