About Lake Weir High School

Lake Weir High school is located in the southeastern section of Marion County. The 1680 students arrive at school from homes with diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. The school zone is wide bringing in students from rural communities to suburban areas. Thirty-five percent of our students come from rural areas and fifteen percent from small towns. The school boundary lines make up approximately 450 square miles, which is 35% of the county’s area. 73% of our students are on free or reduced lunch; the mobility rate is 46%, and 31% of our students are minorities. Our faculty is approximately 78% majority and 22% minority. Lake Weir High's feeder schools are Lake Weir Middle School and Fort McCoy School.

Lake Weir High opened their doors in September of 1955. The school offers a curriculum that prepares students to be productive after graduation, whether they continue their education in an academic setting or enter the workforce. Course offerings range from advanced placement/honors, applied technology programs to modified courses for exceptional education students.

Students experience the benefits of programs that integrate academics with academy programs so that real world situations can better prepare them for the careers of their choice. The four formal academies of Human Services, Multi-Media/Communications and Technology (MTAC), Applied Science, and Industrial Arts/Advanced Placement are available for students.

In 2005-2006, we began our mentoring program that matches approximately 25 students to an advisor who is a faculty member. The advisors and advisees meet monthly to discuss issues and concerns students may be dealing with as well as guiding them in setting goals and planning. The LWHS Mentoring Panel meets to design structured curriculum pertinent to student needs.

Lake Weir High is part of the High Schools That Work consortium and uses their key principles along with the Continuous Improvement Model as the research based reform model to guide instructional and school practices.
