SCHOOL PROFILE
Lake Weir Middle School resides in a rural community that is primarily agricultural and horse farm oriented. The economic status of the school population varies with approximately 70 percent of the students qualifying for free or reduced lunches. Student breakdown is as follows: 66 percent White, 17 percent Black, 12 percent Hispanic, and 5 percent Asian/Indian/Multi-racial. We have 33 ESOL students and the total student enrollment is 1,370.
The student population is divided into three grade levels: sixth, seventh and eighth. Servicing these grades are 40 general academic teachers, 4 alternative education teachers, 13.8 exceptional education teachers, and 5 applied technology, 2 enrichment teachers, 6.8 support personnel, 3 administrators and 5 categorically funded positions (5 intensive teachers and one reading coach). Instruction in Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, Physical Education, Fine Arts and Applied Technology is available.
Classes for exceptional education are provided for those students who qualify. In order to assist those subgroups who are not making Adequate Yearly Progress, we are following county guidelines by testing students who are Level 1 and 2 on FCAT Reading using the Corrective Reading Placement Test. Based on the results students should be placed into the appropriate class and minutes of instruction per day. An attempt will be made to include all ESE students who are not self-contained in regular education reading classes this year.
A classroom has been devoted to the creation of a SuccessMaker lab through which Math remediation will take place.
SCHOOL COLORS AND MASCOT
Lake Weir Middle's school colors are blue and gold. Our mascot is the Bald Eagle.
