Curriculum Offered at NH Jones

Students in grades K-5 typically enroll in courses that are classified as “self-contained” where they spend the majority of the time in one classroom. Therefore, in most cases, there is not a need for separate course numbers within each grade level. The classroom instruction is based on the expectations identified in the Sunshine State Standards.
Mrs. Guest -- Assistant Principal of Curriculum
We have one classroom at each grade level of Primary Cluster (formerly Project Child) and we have three, multi-age, self-contained highly gifted classrooms. We have a half time special education teacher that facilitates a small program for SLD children in the classrooms. We are a mentor school for 12 schools in Marion County for our fourth year for the EETT grant, as well as being named one of 38 schools in the nation to be named an Apple Distiguished Program for 2010 and again in 2011..
We have a stable staff of 52 teachers. We are not a Title I school as only about 30% of our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches. We have maintained a school grade of "A" for the past six years. We were also one of several Marion County Schools to receive a passing grade for the tenth straight year under the "No Child Left Behind" legislation. We were also one of 13 of schools named as a "Blue Ribbon School" in the state of Florida in 2005 and have been nominated for 2011.
Dr. N. H. Jones continues to dominate the Marion County Media Festival. We consistently win between 80% - 90% of the county awards as well as many state and international award. It is planned that we expand the media production program to be part of our regular curriculum, providing students an opportunity for a rigorous and relevant program of study.
Our major areas to work on this year are:
- Ensuring that we have no level one or two students in the area of reading or mathematics.
- Ensuring that all fourth grade students are proficient in the area of writing.
- Increasing the percent of students achieving at the higher quartiles.
