Cupid

By: Regina Wilkerson

In Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of desire, affection and erotic love.  His parents were Mars, the god of war, and Venus, the goddess of love.  Cupid is portrayed as a small blind-folded winged boy, carrying a bow and arrow.  Once struck in the heart by Cupid’s arrow, the victim falls in love.  Cupid’s bow is said to look like the double curve of a human upper lip.  His arrows signify the desires and emotions of love.
Greek mythology almost always mirrors the Roman gods and goddesses.  The names are different, but the stories are the same.  Readers of Greek myths know Cupid as Eros, Mars as Ares, and Venus as Aphrodite.
