Accelerated Reader Program

Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program encourages students to read for pleasure. Students take a STAR Reading test at the beginning of the school year which determines their recreational reading range. Language Arts teachers then assign individual AR quarterly point goals to each student based upon their recreational reading range. Students visit the media center to choose an Accelerated Reader book within their recreational reading range. After reading the book, students take an AR quiz to test their comprehension. Points are awarded for passing the AR quiz. Students who reach their quarterly point goal by the deadline and who maintain an average percent correct of 85% or higher receive an AR stamp in their planner and an invitation to attend the quarterly AR Reading Celebration party.

Most of the books in the NMMS media center are Accelerated Reader books. AR quizzes are available for both fiction and non-fiction books on a variety of topics. Because Marion County now has AR Enterprise, our quiz list has expanded! Every AR school in Marion County now owns every AR quiz! Use AR Home connect to your child's progress in the AR Program. AR Home Connect.

To view a complete list of which books have AR, go to AR BookFinder Program.

If you would like to see which books we have in our school library, go to Destiny, our online card catalog, and click on our school.

AR Reading Celebration

Above are students enjoying an AR reading celebration. Students who read and reach their quarterly AR goal by the deadline and who maintain an average percent correct of 85% or higher on AR quizzes are eligible to attend the AR Reading Celebrations. Students enjoy a delicious treat and have fun creating cartoons, avatars, and taking photos with our Mac laptops! We also have Wii, Band Hero and XBox on the big screen! Make sure to read and reach your goal Colts -- you don't want to miss the fun!

Every time a student reaches their AR goal by the deadline they receive an AR stamp in their planner and are eligible to attend the AR Reading Celebration party for that quarter. Each stamp earned gives the student extra library privileges. Students with one stamp can come read quietly in our reading nook with a pass from their teacher. Students with two stamps are allowed to check out an extra library book. Students who earn three AR stamps can waive all overdue fines accrued on their account, and students with four AR stamps receive a free book from the media center.

Sunshine State Young Readers' Award

The Sunshine State Young Readers' Award program features fifteen books chosen each year by a committee of Florida Library Media Specialists. The books are chosen for their quality and appeal, and represent some of the best in children's literature today. Students in grades 6 through 8 are encouraged to read at least three of the books, so they can vote for their favorite. Every year, the author of the book with the most statewide votes is presented with the Sunshine State Young Readers' Award at the annual FAME conference.

Students at NMMS earn stamps on their ice cream ticket for every Sunshine State book they read. Students with at least 3 stamps on their ice cream ticket will be eligible to vote for their favorite book using our real voting machines in April at the Sunshine Ice Cream Sundae Party. The more Sunshine Books you read, the more ice cream and toppings you will earn!
