The report card for Marion County Public Schools shows mixed results at all three levels – elementary, middle, and high.

While the vast majority of schools – 27 -- improved or maintained their letter grades, 11 others dropped one letter grade and five dropped two letter grades. Elementary schools continue to show the strongest number of “A” and “B” grades, but high schools tumbled in their grades, with six out of seven earning “D” grades, some of which may be appealed.

Based on initial reviews, the biggest reason for lower grades appears to be students in the lowest 25% not making sufficient learning gains over last year. This alone can reduce a school’s grade by a full letter. In addition, it’s harder for schools to maintain higher grades than to earn them in the first place.

Here’s how Marion County public schools fared in this year’s FCAT grades:

This year’s grades summary:

  • 2 schools jumped one letter grade
  • 25 schools maintained their grade
  • 11 schools dropped one letter grade
  • 5 schools dropped two letter grades

Comparing with last year, Marion County has:

  • 41% fewer “A” schools (13 schools)
  • 38% more “B” schools (11 schools)
  • 17% more “C” schools (14 schools)
  • 4 more “D” schools (6 Schools)
  • NO “F” schools
