 February 2012

Parents/Guardians,

Everything is buzzing here at South Ocala!  Our Title One fourth grade writing camp and third grade math camp is well underway.  Our Successmaker lab is open every morning at 7:00 for additional reading and math practice; this is a researched based program that gives students practice in the skills that they will need to be successful on the FCAT.  IXL is a skill based math program that has been purchased for home use for every child grade PreK-5. FCAT Explorer is also a wonderful site for Reading and Math grades 3-5.  Ticket to Read is an excellent Reading program that can be accessed at home for reading practice.  Your child’s teacher has password information for all of these valuable sites.

It is the time of year when we ask that parents take a moment to fill out our Title One parent survey.  Parents can visit www.marion.k12.fl.usand click on the Uncle Sam “Parent Survey” option along the left side. Parents can then view the entire survey prior to completing it in either Englishor Spanish. Parents without computer access may complete a survey at their child’s school or at the Title I Office located at 306 NW 7 Ave. in Ocala.  Surveys are also available on the Parent Portal website.  All surveys must be completed by March 26, 2012. Parent response helps the district and local schools increase parent involvement to better serve students, parents, and communities.

I am pleased to announce that we have a new P.I.E. partner; Taekwondo Kids located at 3885 SE Lake Weir Ave, Ocala, FL  34480, (352) 620-2579.  Our P.I.E program helps us to enrich classrooms and school programs.

I would like to remind parents that our car line is a no cell phone zone at the pick-up area.  This is in place to ensure that our children are safe when loading cars.  We need 100% of parent attention when loading over 300 kids into cars in a 20 minute period.  Phone conversations and texting can cause parents to lose focus and could make for a catastrophic situation.  I am certain that there is no call that is more important than the safety of a child.

Please remember that there is no school on Monday February 20th.  Take a moment to read with your child or sign on to one of the programs above for some academic practice on that Monday.

Educationally Yours,
