1. Using a web (if absent, see the one in your make up work as the website will not allow me to recreate), write the name of someone (real or fictitious) whom you consider a hero. Then, in each of the four outer circles, write a word or phrase identifying an important characteristic of your hero- a quality that makes the person admirable in your eyes. Alongside each of the circles, jot down something your hero has done that illustrates the characteristic written in each circle.
a. Below the web, answer the following
i. Which of the characteristics that you included above do you think is most important for a hero to have? Why?
ii. Which characteristic would be most needed if the hero were involved in a life-or-death situation? Why?
2. Read “The Man in the Water”. You may read this before or after school in my classroom from the workbook page 151, or follow this link
a. After reading, use the same web format as your “journal”, preplan an essay about The Man in the Water, who remained anonymous for some time.
Is this man a hero? Use evidence from the text to support your thesis.
3. From youtube, we watched 4 videos based on the Air Florida Flight 90 tragedy, which included information on the Man in the Water (the person himself, not the essay). Watch these videos:
Video 1, Video 2, Video 3, and Video 4.
a. Following the videos, respond on the same sheet of paper as your essay planning – Do you still believe the man is a hero? Did the videos change your perception? Why or why not?
b. Title this paper “Man in the Water” put a #10 on it and put it in your notebook.
