What is MCCA?

Welcome to the Marion County Center for the Arts (MCCA), a visual and performing fine arts magnet program at West Port High School in Ocala, Florida. This center attracts artistically gifted and talented students from Marion County and surrounding areas. Students accepted into the Center's program may attend West Port High School regardless of their school assignment.

The mission of the Marion County Center for the Arts is to prepare artistically gifted and talented students for post-secondary arts education and/or employment in the arts while aspiring to the highest quality arts and academic instruction possible.

Students are accepted into the program based on audition, GPA, FCAT scores and discipline record in order to pursue rigorous courses of study in 2-D and 3-D art, acting, dance, digital animation, electronic music, instrumental music, musical theatre, photography, piano keyboarding, orchestra, technical theatre, and vocal music in addition to the regular high school graduation requirements. Qualified students may take Honors and Advanced Placement Courses in both academic courses and fine arts where offered. Students completing AP courses may earn college credit based on their performance on the AP exam. Every attempt will be made to match programs of study with each student's interest. In addition, West Port offers dual enrollment courses taught on campus which may lead to an Associate of Arts degree at graduation.

The faculty of the Marion County Center for the Arts is comprised of professional artists and arts educators dedicated to the growth of the student artists through education and pre-professional training in the arts. It is our affirmation that the power of the arts ennobles the lives and endeavors of humanity. We further believe in offering a personalized atmosphere designed to achieve mastery of traditional artistic forms while stimulating creativity in the context of research and experimentation. Students are encouraged to explore the full range of their discipline in a collaborative environment that meets the highest standards of academic and professional arts training.

Our facilities include a 664-seat theatre, an 1800 sq. ft. dance studio, both 2-D and 3-D art labs, a fully-equipped darkroom, soundproof practice rooms and a specialized digital animation lab. The Marion County Center for the Arts began in 2001 at West Port High School, which opened in 2000. Presently, the magnet school has an enrollment of over 470 students from all parts of Marion County. The magnet has already impacted the community by earning high awards in all areas of the visual and performing arts.
